Appliances
- Use ice to sharpen the blades in your garbage disposal.
- Close the refrigerator door on a strip of paper. If you can remove it easily, you’re wasting electricity and should replace the door stripping.
- Unplug appliances when not using them or use a smart power strip that senses when appliances are off & cuts phantom energy use.
- Defrost your freezer if the ice is 5mm thick
- Clean refrigerator coil (twice a year). Unplug first then wipe down with a damp cloth.
- Let leftovers cool before refrigerating them. Steam from hot leftovers can cause the temperature to raise, making the refrigerator less energy efficient.
- Avoid preheating the oven too soon. If you bake twice a week, you can save up to 50 lbs of carbon per year by not preheating the oven earlier than necessary.
- One way to get rid of freezer odor is with ordinary fresh bread. Just place a loaf or 2 in your freezer and leave for about 3 or 4 nights. Should do the trick!
- To freshen up and deodorize your microwave oven, place a heat-resistant bowl of water on the carousel and add 3 or 4 slices of lemon. Cook it on high for 30 seconds.
- The peach pits and cucumber peels that you put in the garbage disposal eventually end up in streams and lakes where they deprive the water of oxygen and kill aquatic life like algae and fish. Running the garbage disposal also uses a lot of water. Instead, add food waste to your compost pile. No compost pile? Put food scraps in the trash. Once food reaches the landfill, it biodegrades over time.
- Dig out warranties and product manuals and check on recommended maintenance for furnaces, equipment, appliances, and tools. Mark your calendar to track scheduled upkeep and service.
- Clean lint from the entire clothes dryer vent system, from the dryer to the exterior vent cap.
- Clean underneath range hood. Remove and clean or replace range hood filters. Yes, they can be changed.
- Ensure the clothes dryer is properly vented to the outside and that the vent is clear of obstructions and lint. Do not push the dryer too far back or the vent hose may become kinked and therefore obstructed. By placing a 2×4 piece of wood behind the dryer, the situation can be prevented.
