Door Knock Day – The day was really special. Ty Pennington and the design team knocked on the Jones’ door about 8 am. The family was so excited. Sabrena, a single mother of 3, overcome by emotion embraced Ty and the design team for several minutes. The family’s next stop was Tampa, Florida while their impossible dream was made possible. Shoemaker Homes’ Leadership Team was swinging into action putting together the pieces that would provide the build team with the support they would need to go 24/7 for the next 5 days.
Tuesday, January 30th, 2007:
Braveheart and Demolition Day – What a beautiful sight. Hundreds of blue shirts and white hardhats marching down the street. The builder’s braveheart speech was inspiring. Family and friends also spoke of the family’s giving spirit. The demolition of their present home began about 11 am. Then began the dirt work that continued throughout the night and early morning. Excavating and bringing in over 315 loads of dirt. This was all done in an astonishing 17 hours! An Extreme Makeover: Home Edition record. WOW!!!
Wednesday, January 31st, 2007:
Construction Day #1 – This morning foundation footings were dug and the rough in stages of the plumbing system were installed. The frame for the foundation was built, post tension foundation system installed and the concrete arrived around noon. By early evening we were ready for the next stage, framing.
Thursday, February 1st, 2007:
Construction Day #2 – Framing began on schedule but a hard rain fell overnight and stopped construction for several hours. Work resumed about 8 am and 67 framers completed the framing by noon. By late afternoon the roof was almost complete and the electrical, plumbing, HVAC and security system wiring was well under way. The entire day the build site was full of skilled craftsmen and wonderful volunteers refusing to allow adverse weather conditions dent the goal of meeting the completion deadline.
Friday, February 2nd, 2007:
Construction Day #3 – Friday’s most visible activity was the 57 brick masons. Many blue shirted masons were attacking the walls. There was a bucket brigade, throwing five or more bricks at a time, moving the brick from their staging area to the build site.
Meanwhile, the drywall was completed in record time and the kitchen cabinets were installed. The trim molding was added, doors and windows installed and the columns were being placed across the front porch.
Another very successful day with wonderful participation from fantastic subcontractors and volunteers. We were also honored to have special guest such as Governor Haley Barbour and his wife Marsha, Congressman Chip Pickering and family as well as the Mayor of Brandon Carlo Martella visit the build site.
Saturday, February 3rd, 2007:
Construction Day #4 – A highly successful day. State Auditor Phil Bryant was by and was very complimentary of the efforts of the community while providing breakfast to the volunteers, spectators and contractors. The driveway was formed and poured, the landscaping was started, painting in the interior was finished, much of the concrete stucco was completed, the exterior trim was completed and painted and the garage doors were installed.
Sunday, February 4th, 2007:
SUPER BOWL SUNDAY (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition…the Super Bowl of residential construction)…….the day labeled as “Turning the Keys Back to Production” The Build Team worked very hard right up to the finish. The builder, Scott Shoemaker, along with his entire Leadership Team turned over the keys to the house about 3 pm. This symbolized the finishing of construction and the beginning of decorating the home with furniture. All that was left was for the Design Team to have the furniture and accessories added. The Design Team of Ty, Paige, Michael, Johnny and Eduardo added their personal touches to every room and the home was professionally cleaned to have it ready for the return of the family.
Monday, February 5th, 2007:
Reveal “Move That Bus” Day – What an incredible day. After all the furniture had been added with the aid of the Mississippi College football team and countless volunteers, the family was brought home. As hundreds of spectators cheered “Move That Bus” Sabrena, Marjon, Mardaireus and Marjiya stood in awe of what they saw. Their new home, built with love by over 4000 volunteers.
